For young people thinking about starting to look for their first creative or digital work, one thing matters more than anything else: your portfolio. It doesn’t matter if you’re applying for a job, freelancing, joining a course, or volunteering on a creative project. People want to see what you can do, and our new online course is there to help you create something to help you stand out.
Right now is the perfect time to start building that digital portfolio.
And here are some reasons why:
1. Employers care about skills, not grades
The creative and digital world is constantly changing. Employers aren’t relying on CVs as much as they used to, they’re relying on evidence. They want to see real examples of what you can create, how you solve problems, and how you approach professional projects.
A portfolio shows:
your style
your strengths
your creativity
your potential
your willingness to learn
Even if you’ve never had a job before (or ever set foot in a media classroom) your portfolio will speak for you. A couple of pieces of work that show your skills and passion will be infinitely more important than grades or certificates.
When a young person shows a potential client or employer a clear, organised selection of their work, they can immediately stand out. Don't wait until you 'feel more ready' as you should start compiling a selection today.
2. You don’t need expensive software anymore
There used to be a range of barriers to entry to digital jobs: if you didn’t have Adobe software, a high-end camera, or specialist drawing tools, building a portfolio felt impossible. That’s no longer true.
Today, you can create professional-looking work using free or low-cost tools:
Canva for design
CapCut for editing videos
Callipeg for animation
DaVinci Resolve for more advanced motion graphics work
Pixlr or Photopea for photo editing
Audacity for audio
Phone cameras are now good enough to produce high-quality content. Templates are more accessible than ever (to at least start with!). And the creative world values creativity, not perfection. The tools are in your pocket already.
3. Even small pieces of work matter
Many young people think a portfolio needs huge projects, paid jobs, or fancy clients. It really doesn't.
In fact, some of the best early portfolios include:
a few simple posters
a short showreel video
mock-up adverts
a redesigned charity flyer
a set of Instagram graphics
a mini hand-drawn animation
What employers are looking for is not “perfection” or that you've worked with big brands or on major film sets, but evidence of:
creativity
effort
improvement
curiosity
The kind of work you can make in an afternoon can be enough to make your portfolio look alive, evolving and full of potential.
So why wait?
4. The industry values initiative more than experience
One of the most powerful signals you can send to an employer is this:
“I care about what I do and I'm ready to get show it off.”
Building a portfolio shows initiative, motivation, and independence - three traits that employers in creative and digital fields value massively. And there is a huge community of digital creatives in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and Dorset who are looking for young talent.
Whether you’re applying for your first role, joining a volunteer project, or pitching a small freelance job, initiative sets you apart. It says a lot more than a line on a CV ever could.
Starting a portfolio now shows that you’re taking your future seriously, even if you’re still figuring everything out. We can help you prepare for university or college, prepare to apply for an employer or build a freelance portfolio to start finding clients. It all depends on what you are looking for.
5. Opportunities come to those who are willing to show off their skills
Volunteering roles, internships, paid opportunities, work experience placements, and youth-led projects all ask for one thing: examples.
Most young people panic when asked to show their work. But the ones who already have a digital portfolio ready, even a simple one, are the ones who get the chances. And we are here to help you figure out how to present yourself to the people that matter. With a working portfolio, you can feel more prepared.
And when something exciting appears, you don’t have to scramble. You just send a link.
Don’t wait for “perfect”—start with what you have
Building a digital portfolio isn’t about being a polished professional. It’s about capturing your journey, showing your potential, and giving yourself the best possible chance to step into creative work.
Start small. Start simple. Start now.
